Longbourn
The Bennets' Home in P&P '05

Groombridge Place used as 'Longbourn'

Situated near Tunbridge Wells on the border of Kent and East Sussex in Southern England, Groombridge Place is a tranquil moated house of mellow brick, set within acres of gardens. Although a dwelling was first built on the site around the year 1200, the present house dates from late 1600s, when the first formal gardens were planned with the help of the celebrated horticulturist John Evelyn. While the house is a private home, the gardens are open to the public throughout the summer, and are visited by 200,000 people each year. The production was fortunate to want to use the house as the Bennet family home at a time when the property had changed hands (for only the second time in 400 years), and the new owner was persuaded to delay his own plans for interior redecoration until after the Bennets and production crew had moved out. Sarah Greenwood (Production Designer) and her art department were able to transform the house interior to late 18th Century shabby chic. 'Longbourn' became a house overrun with young women. The home of a genteel family but not a wealthy one, where the only tranquillity is to be found in Mr Bennet's library. On the exterior, Lizzie's duckboard bridge was built across the moat, windows were changed to match the period portrayed, and the tidy courtyard became the manure-rich, animal refuge of the various farmyard creatures kept for the family table. Netherfield Park
Where the Ball took place in P&P '05

Basildon Park used as 'Netherfield Park'

Netherfield, temporary home of Mr Bingley, the dashing young man whose residence near Longbourn awakens the hope in Mrs Bennet that he must marry one of her five daughters, is set at Basildon Park, a magnificent 18th Century Palladian mansion, set in 400 acres of parkland, overlooking the River Thames in Berkshire. Built between 1776 and 1783, Basildon Park fell into disrepair in the early part of the twentieth century, and was rescued and restored by Lord and Lady Iliffe in 1950, who filled the house with important paintings, textiles and furniture. In 1978, the Iliffes gave the property to the National Trust, along with a large endowment and a fine collection of paintings and furniture. The house and gardens are now open to the public from spring through autumn. Audiences will see the West front and loggia of Basildon Park, as well as the dining room and the Octagon Drawing Room, which overlooks the East Park.

Rosings Park
Where Lady Catherine lives in P&P '05

Burghley House used as 'Rosings'

For the exterior and interior of Rosings, the imposing home of Lady Catherine de Bourg, daunting dowager aunt of Darcy, and patron of Mr Collins, the production used Burghley House, one of the largest homes in England which remains in the hands of the descendents of the family who built it in 1600s. Built by Sir William Cecil, Chancellor and favourite of Queen Elizabeth 1st, the building was not much altered over the years. Many of the Cecil descendents travelled extensively, acquiring major works of art and employing artists and craftsmen from Europe to enhance their surroundings. The Heaven room, used as Lady Catherine's drawing room, is an example. Burghley House is now owned by a family trust, and the property is managed by Lady Victoria Leatham.Visit:  Burghley House Website

Pemberley
Mr. Darcy's home in P&P '05

House used as 'Pemberley'

The largest private country house in England, home of Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth house was used as the exterior of Pemberley, Darcy's family home. Jane Austen mentions Chatsworth in the book, and the Duchess believes that the author was thinking of Chatsworth when describing Pemberley. The Duchess is one of the renowned Mitford Girls (her sisters were writers Nancy and Jessica Mitford, Unity was a famous supporter of Hitler before the second world war, and Diana married British fascist leader Oswald Mosley), who between them probably inspired as many books as the two author sisters wrote. Within the house, the grand staircase of the Painted Hall is where Lizzie and the Gardiners begin their tour of Pemberley, and within the Sculpture Gallery, Lizzie Bennet sees the bust of Mr Darcy, while his housekeeper describes the many good qualities of her master.
